Honor those men and women who flew for the
U.S. Navy during WWII

Monument Park, in Virginia Beach, VA, is home to twelve life-and-a-quarter size bronze sculptures, each paying tribute to a different phase in the history of Naval Aviation. The larger-than-life monuments, which are installed on 4 foot granite pedestals, honor those who served and sacrificed during World War II.

The 8 foot tall heroic bronze figures were sculpted over the course of about 5 months, before being cast in bronze at The Maiden Foundry. Many more months were spent researching the authentic gear, pouring over photographs and developing a maquette.

The bronze pilots are accompanied by a 9 foot bronze wall, a fabricated replica of a hatch door from a WWII aircraft carrier. Pictures and measurements were taken from the USS Midway to aid in fabrication and to ensure that no details were overlooked. Innovative techniques were used to accomplish the pitted, weathered, paint on paint look of the outside, while keeping the inside (backside) nice and smooth, as if it were protected from the elements.

"I tried to capture the pilots as they scattered to their aircraft, adrenaline coursing through their bodies, as the anticipation and fear collide into a wave of uncertainty.
