In the U.S. brown pelicans are found mostly in the southeastern and southwestern regions. They are highly successful creatures, having been around millions of years longer than humans. Though clumsy and comical on land, they are graceful in flight and expert hunters. Pelicans soar along the wave-tops and swoop into wave crests searching for small fish just below the surface. They then dive into the water, protected and buoyed by air sacs under their skin. The pelican's beak can expand like a balloon, taking in up to three gallons of water and a fish in its beak.

Mike holds the original wax "Wave Hopper" before it was molded and cast in bronze. It has been carefully designed and measured in conjunction with the base for support and balance to convey a pelican gliding just above the surface of the water.
